FSSAI sets 14-day timeline for regulatory food sample reports under amended lab rules

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has prescribed a 14-day timeline for issuing laboratory reports on regulatory food samples, while laying down timelines and standardised methods for food sample analysis under amended regulations that will come into force on April 1, 2027.
The Food Safety and Standards (Laboratory and Sample Analysis) Amendment Regulations, 2026, notified with the previous approval of the Central Government, further amend the 2011 regulations.
Under the amended regulations, a Food Analyst will have to issue a signed report in the prescribed format within 14 days of receiving a food article for analysis.
If the analysis cannot be completed within that period, the analyst will have to inform the Designated Officer and the Commissioner of Food Safety, stating the reasons for the delay and specifying the additional time required.
A similar 14-day timeline has been prescribed for referral laboratories in appeal cases.
The laboratory will have to issue a report signed by its Director within 14 days of receiving the sample.
In case of a delay, the authorities must be informed of the reasons and the additional time needed.
For imported food samples, a notified or referral laboratory, as applicable, will have to provide the laboratory analysis report within five days from the date of receipt of the sample, in accordance with the prescribed format under the Food Safety and Standards (Import) Regulations, 2017.
If testing cannot be completed within the specified period, the laboratory will have to give the reasons in writing to the Authorised Officer.
The amended regulations also formally specify methods for food sample analysis.
Laboratories will use the manuals of methods of analysis amended or adopted by FSSAI from time to time.
Where a method for analysing a particular parameter is not available in these manuals, laboratories may adopt validated methods prescribed by AOAC, ISO, IUPAC, BIS, Codex Alimentarius and other specified or internationally recognised agencies.
The regulations further provide that after testing or analysis, the certificate signed by the Director of the Referral Food Laboratory or the report signed by the Food Analyst must be supplied forthwith to the sender in the prescribed forms.
For unspecified products, the quantity of sample drawn will be governed by guidelines issued by the Food Authority from time to time.
FSSAI had published the draft amendment regulations in February 2025 and invited objections and suggestions for 60 days. The authority said the representations received were considered before the regulations were finalised.
The notification was issued by FSSAI Chief Executive Officer Rajit Punhani. It also provides for the omission of Forms A and B from the existing regulations.

Centre fixes ₹25,000 monthly wage ceiling under Social Security Code

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) The Centre has fixed ₹25,000 per month as the wage ceiling for the purposes of Chapter III of the Code on Social Security, 2020, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Thursday.
The new wage ceiling will come into effect from the date of publication of the notification in the Official Gazette.
The ministry issued the notification, S.O. 5109(E), in exercise of powers conferred under clause (89) of Section 2 of the Code on Social Security, 2020.
