Haryana pollution board warns Gurugram housing societies against non-compliant diesel generators, untreated sewage discharge

Gurugram, Oct 14 (UNI) The Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) has warned residential welfare associations (RWAs) and facility managers in Gurugram against operating non-compliant diesel generator sets for routine power supply and discharging untreated sewage into public drains, calling for strict adherence to air pollution control measures and wastewater treatment standards.
At an awareness and compliance meeting with RWA representatives and facility managers on Wednesday, the board outlined the requirements under Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) Direction No. 76, the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) and regulations governing sewage treatment plants (STPs).
Assistant Executive Engineer Kamesh said diesel generator sets that failed to meet prescribed emission standards should not be operated for routine residential or commercial electricity supply during power outages.
He said generator sets must be equipped with Central Pollution Control Board-approved retrofitted emission control devices (RECDs) or converted to dual-fuel operation, as applicable to their rated capacity and the relevant regulatory requirements.
The use of diesel generators for essential services, including lifts and emergency water pumps, must also comply with the prescribed provisions, he said.
The board also directed housing societies and facility managers to implement GRAP measures, including effective dust suppression, prevention of open burning of waste and proper collection and disposal of construction and demolition debris.
Particular emphasis was placed on sewage management, with residential complexes instructed to ensure round-the-clock operation and regular maintenance of their sewage treatment plants.
The board stressed that untreated sewage must not be released into public drains and advised housing societies to reuse treated wastewater for horticulture, toilet flushing and other permissible purposes.
The meeting underscored the responsibility of residential complexes to maintain pollution control systems and comply with environmental regulations aimed at reducing air pollution and preventing contamination of public drainage networks.
