Hyd: NPS adoption among MSMEs can boost retirement security, workforce retention: Jt Labour Commissioner

Hyderabad, Sept 17 (UNI) Adoption of the National Pension System (NPS) by MSMEs can strengthen social security for private-sector employees while helping companies attract and retain their workforce, Telangana Joint Labour Commissioner R Chandrasekaran said on Thursday.
Addressing a workshop on “NPS – Strengthening MSMEs through Social Security and Workforce Retention”, organised by the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FTCCI) in association with the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), Chandrasekaran urged MSMEs to consider providing NPS as an employee benefit.
He said retirement planning was particularly important for private-sector employees who may not have access to traditional pension benefits, and described NPS as a “silent saving” mechanism.
PFRDA Assistant Manager Ajinkya Deshpande said NPS, introduced for new Central Government employees in 2004, was later extended to State Governments and the corporate sector and opened voluntarily to all citizens in 2009.
According to PFRDA data, NPS had 2.32 crore subscribers with assets under management of ₹17.57 lakh crore as of September 13, 2026.
The workshop highlighted the growing participation of private-sector employees in NPS. PFRDA's 2024-25 Annual Report said private-sector NPS accounts stood at 66.45 lakh as of March 31, 2025, up 20.6 per cent from 55.12 lakh a year earlier, while 19,867 corporates had adopted NPS.
DIC General Manager E S Ganesh Ram said NPS could benefit both employees and employers, while FTCCI President K K Maheshwari stressed the need to make retirement planning part of employee-benefit frameworks.
More than 100 private-sector employees and MSME representatives attended the half-day workshop, where pension fund representatives explained NPS products, processes and implementation.
