Key accused in BJP worker’s death held after four years

Kolkata, June 26 (UNI) After evading authorities for over four years, Arun Dey, a prime accused in the 2021 post-poll violence case involving the murder of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar in Kolkata, was today arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Dey had been on the run since the incident and carried a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest.
According to sources, Dey was apprehended from a secret hideout in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Further details regarding the arrest are awaited.
Dey is one of five key suspects in the brutal killing of Sarkar, a resident of Kankurgachi in North Kolkata. The incident occurred on May 2, 2021, shortly after the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections were declared, in which the Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured a resounding victory.
The remaining four accused — Sukhdeo Podder (alias Sukha), Gopal Das (alias Vishal), Amit, and Biswajit Das (alias Bomba) — are still at large.

All five have been identified as local strongmen affiliated with the Trinamool Congress and are believed to have close ties to MLA Beleghata in North Kolkata Paresh Paul and Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor Swapan Samaddar.
Though Paul had been questioned by the CBI, his name did not appear in the agency’s charge sheet, a development that sparked outrage among Sarkar’s family members.
The CBI took over the case following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. In September 2021, a trial court in Kolkata declared the five accused as absconders. Subsequently, the CBI issued a reward of Rs 50,000 for information on each of them.
Following his arrest, Arun Dey is expected to be produced before a special court in Kolkata, where the CBI is likely to seek his custody for further interrogation.
