Maha: Two undertrial deaths in a month at Amravati Central Jail

Amravati, Sep 18 (UNI) Two young undertrial inmates lodged in Amravati Central Jail died within a span of one month, prompting a social worker to seek the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for a probe into the conditions there.
The deceased have been identified as Adil Qureshi, a native of Mumbai and Mohammad Mohasin, a resident of Akola.
Both were lodged in Amravati Central Jail and died while in judicial custody within a month.
According to reports, the jail administration has attributed the deaths to illness.
The incidents have raised concerns over the welfare of prisoners, the availability of medical care, health conditions inside the prison, and the effectiveness of jail administration protocols.
Social worker Alim Patel has submitted a memorandum to the District Collector and the Jail Superintendent, seeking an inquiry into the matter.
He urged the Collector to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and requested the Jail Superintendent to ensure strict compliance with NHRC guidelines.
Patel also sought accountability from prison authorities and called for measures to safeguard prisoners' rights and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The deaths have triggered demands for greater transparency in prison administration, with activists stressing the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the fatalities.
