Mamata’s exploitative politics led TMC to lose its symbol: Bawankule

Nagpur, Sep 18 (UNI) Maharashtra Revenue Minister and senior BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Friday took a swipe at the Trinamool Congress (TMC), alleging that the party has been pushed into its current crisis after losing the confidence of voters in West Bengal due to what he described as years of exploitative politics.
Addressing mediapersons in Nagpur, Bawankule said TMC founder and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was finding it difficult to protect her party as its support base had steadily weakened over time, resulting in the present dispute over its identity and election symbol.
Reacting to the Opposition's criticism of the Election Commission’s decision to freeze the party’s name and symbol, he said the controversy was being unnecessarily amplified and described the INDIA alliance as a coalition that was steadily losing relevance.
The minister claimed that parties which came together under the INDIA bloc banner during the Lok Sabha elections have gradually moved apart and are facing political setbacks.
“Mamata Banerjee is capable of handling her own party, but her style of politics has cost her public support. As a result, she is struggling to preserve the party.
Similar challenges await Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and other constituents of the INDIA alliance,” Bawankule said.
He further asserted that the Congress too would face a similar decline by 2029.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission, in an interim order issued on Thursday, said the dispute between the rival factions led by Mamata Banerjee and Arup Roy requires detailed adjudication under the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.
Until a final decision is taken, the Commission has barred both groups from using the name “All India Trinamool Congress” as well as the party’s reserved “Flowers and Grass” symbol for the October 6 by-elections.
