Mutual Funds investors bet big on small-caps, Rs 7,973 cr flows in Aug: AMFI data

New Delhi, Sep 10 (UNI) Small-cap mutual funds remained the biggest draw among equity fund categories in August, attracting nearly Rs 8,000 crore as investors continued to favour the segment despite fluctuations in overall equity flows.
According to the latest data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), small-cap funds recorded net inflows of Rs 7,973.33 crore in August, compared with Rs 7,767.50 crore in July. The category registered a month-on-month increase of around 2.6 per cent.
The sustained inflow comes despite the relatively modest monthly increase. Small-cap funds had already attracted more than Rs 7,700 crore in July, meaning the category has maintained elevated inflows for two consecutive months.
Overall equity mutual fund inflows improved in August, rising nearly 19 per cent to Rs 29,328.62 crore from Rs 24,697.39 crore in July. Small-cap funds alone accounted for roughly 27 per cent of the total equity inflows during the month.
The preference for higher-growth segments becomes clearer when mid-cap funds are included. Mid-cap schemes attracted Rs 6,989.40 crore in August, up from Rs 6,192.31 crore in July.
Combined, small- and mid-cap funds received Rs 14,962.73 crore, or around 51 per cent of the total money flowing into equity mutual funds during the month.
August also marked the strongest monthly inflow into small-cap funds in the January-August period. The category's inflows have risen sharply from Rs 2,942 crore in January to nearly Rs 8,000 crore in August.
The momentum has strengthened over recent months. Small-cap inflows increased from Rs 4,946 crore in May to Rs 5,602 crore in June, before climbing to Rs 7,767.50 crore in July and Rs 7,973.33 crore in August.
The trend was not mirrored by large-cap funds. Large-cap schemes saw a net outflow of Rs 1,147.36 crore in August, marking their second straight month of withdrawals. The category had recorded an outflow of Rs 1,321.69 crore in July, after receiving Rs 2,067.48 crore in June.
Other diversified equity categories continued to see positive investor interest. Flexi-cap funds attracted Rs 5,059.42 crore in August, compared with Rs 4,709.08 crore in July. Multi-cap funds saw inflows of Rs 3,732.77 crore, up from Rs 3,227.29 crore a month earlier, while large- and mid-cap funds received Rs 3,872.79 crore.
The August data suggests that the small-cap trend is less about a sudden surge and more about sustained investor participation.
While monthly inflows rose only modestly from July, the fact that the category has remained close to the Rs 8,000-crore mark for a second consecutive month highlights continued demand for small-cap exposure. UNI VK SAS
