CM Fadnavis slams 'Vote Theft' claims, defends Maharashtra's SIR 2026 voter revision

Mumbai, Oct 6 (UNI) A fierce political firestorm has engulfed Maharashtra over the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026, with opposition parties launching aggressive protests and alleging systemic "vote theft".
Stepping forward to lead the government's defence, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis forcefully countered the opposition narrative on social media,'X', asserting that an accurate and up-to-date electoral roll is the absolute bedrock of a credible democracy, and that transparency drove the special exercise.
Citing historical precedents dating back to 1952, CM Fadnavis dismissed the backlash as political posturing, emphasizing that rapid urbanization, tenant mobility, and demographic changes make rigorous periodic vetting essential.
The controversy intensified following the release of the draft electoral roll on August 31, which revealed that the state's voter count dropped from a baseline of over 9.78 crore to 7.71 crore.
A staggering 2.07 crore entries were moved to the "ASDD" (Absent, Shifted, Dead, Duplicate) category due to uncollected enumeration forms during door-to-door verification.
Backing both the state administration and the poll panel, CM Fadnavis stressed that intensive revisions are a standard part of electoral governance meant to weed out discrepancies rather than disenfranchise citizens.
