Former Maha Home Minister ridicules Fadnavis for setting up panel to probe MPSC Chairperson

Mumbai, Oct 6 (UNI) Senior Sharad Pawar-led NCP leader and former state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh today ridiculed the move announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of appointing a Special Judicial Commission to investigate the allegations against present Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) Chairman Vivek Bhimanwar, who is alleged to have close ties with Fadnavis.
“I myself wrote to the Maharashtra government 13 times and another two times to the Maharashtra Governor separately, asking them to disclose the Justice Chandiwal Commission Report to the public, which had investigated allegations against me. Yet, that report has neither been disclosed to the public so far, nor has it been placed before the legislature,” Deshmukh said.
“If a report submitted by a commission of retired judges is being suppressed in this manner, will the report of the proposed Special Judicial Commission to investigate the allegations against the MPSC Chairman ever be made public? Or, is this merely a temporary make believe bandage being used only to extinguish the ongoing protest movement of MPSC student aspirants in Pune,” Deshmukh, who resigned after allegations were made against him, told newsmen here.
Deshmukh's reference was to the one-man Justice Chandiwal Commission set up by the then Maharashtra government, headed by retired Bombay High Court judge Justice K U Chandiwal in March 2021, in order to probe allegations of extortion and corruption against former Maharashtra Home minister Anil Deshmukh.
Deshmukh demanded in his letter to Fadnavis that the findings of the 1,400-page Justice Chandiwal Commission which probed allegations against himself (former Maharashtra Home Minister Deshmukh) should be made public immediately and presented in the legislature, in order to instill confidence in the general public and student community that the Fadnaavis government is serious about judicial committees and reports which such committees submit.
“When allegations were made against me, I myself resigned from the post of Home Minister based on ethics and faced the inquiry against me. As long as the present MPSC Chairman continues to be in office, a fair inquiry is impossible. Therefore, the MPSC Chairman should resign immediately before the Special Judicial Commission inquiry into allegations made against him begins,” he further demanded.
“If the credibility of the judicial system has to be maintained, the Fadnavis government should prove its intentions by publicising all previous investigation committee reports and taking direct action against the culprits mentioned in these reports, instead of making promises,” former minister said.
The recommendation made by Fadnavis to set up a special judicial commission should not end up getting perceived as yet another move to waste time, especially when the dissatisfaction of MPSC exam aspirant students in Pune has reached its peak, he said.
Deshmukh also demanded in his letter to Fadnavis that any inquiry should be limited to a timeframe of three months.
“The special judicial committee appointed to investigate the MPSC exam irregularities must be given a fixed time limit of 3 months, after which the report should be made public immediately without any political interference as soon as it is received,” he demanded in his letter.
Deshmukh also demanded that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) action against the main masterminds behind the MPSC drug inspectors’ exam question paper leak must continue.
“Police or Special Investigation Team (SIT) action against the main culprits behind the question paper leak case should not be slowed down under any circumstances, in the name of setting up a Special Judicial Commission to investigate the MPSC Chairman,” he added in his letter to CM Fadnavis.
