Telangana: BRS demands Cong govt convene all-party meeting against Banakacharla project

Hyderabad, May 25 (UNI) Former Irrigation Minister and BRS MLA T Harish Rao on Sunday demanded that the Revanth Reddy government should immediately convene an all-party meeting and pass a unanimous Assembly resolution against diverting Godavari river water to Andhra Pradesh through the Banakacharla project.
He came down heavily on Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the BJP-led Centre for facilitating Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu "hatch a dangerous conspiracy" to divert 200 TMC of Godavari river water to Andhra Pradesh through the Banakacharla project.
He claimed it would lead to massive losses for Telangana if the plan proceeds unchecked, and said this matter should be taken up in the apex court.
The BRS would lead a dharna at the Central Water Commission office in Delhi to "expose the duplicity" of the Centre, Harish said in a press conference here.
“If the state government does not take any action on this project now, our party will take the fight to Delhi and to the people,” he warned.
It may be mentioned here that the Godavari-Banakacherla Link Scheme is a massive project proposed by the Andhra Pradesh Government at an estimated cost of Rs 80,112 crore. The plan involves diverting 200 TMC of water from the Godavari River at Polavaram to Rayalaseema through the Bollapalli reservoir and Banakacherla head regulator.
Harish alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government was executing the Banakacharla project without a single permission from central agencies such as the Central Water Commission (CWC) or the Apex Council, in violation of established rules and the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act.
He alleged the AP CM Naidu was "misusing his influence" at the Centre to construct the Banakacherla project without required permissions, while the BJP-led Centre and the Congress government in Telangana remained mute spectators.
The former Irrigation Minister also questioned the inaction of Union Ministers G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay over the "illegal project that threatens the State’s water rights".
